NORMANS HISTORY

Throughout our 60 years as a company, here at Normans Musical Instruments, we have evolved and shaped ourselves in an ever-changing modern world to stay at the forefront of Musical Instrument retail. Starting out as a small shop in Burton upon Trent in 1959 by Norman Willey (where the name came from) and Joe Fearn, Normans soon established themselves as Nationwide hotspot for instrument purchases, with customers travelling to our store from far and wide.

Pioneering supply of Brass and Woodwind Instruments in the early 70’s across 12 regional stores around the UK meant Normans became a household name amongst schools and brass bands, which is a reputation that is still with us today. During the 90’s we realigned ourselves as a “One Stop Shop” as we expanded our product offering, from being a predominantly Brass & Woodwind supplier, to one that could offer virtually everything a Music Department could need.

At the end of the 20th Century the world changed with next day couriers and the boom of the internet, so we decided to change the way we ran our business, meaning that a network or regional stores was an outmoded method of doing business. We therefore took the decision to systematically centralise our business and dismantle our branch network. In retrospect, this tough decision and difficult period of re-organisation has been the springboard for our continued growth and success in the 21st Century.
